Rabbi Weitzman on Panel at ASRM Annual Conference
Rabbi Gideon Weitzman and Rabbi Elchanan Lewis recently participated in the annual meeting of the American Society for Reproductive Medicine in Atlanta, one of the world's largest conferences on reproductive medicine, along with thousands of international experts in attendance. They attended lectures on subjects ranging from the justifications to offer elective egg freezing to when genetic testing for men should be offered and new developments such as the use of film technology in the operating room. For the third year in a row, Rabbi Weitzman was invited to serve as a panelist at the conference. He was asked to speak on the subject "Clashing Worlds: Culture, Religion and Sexuality" but quickly asked that the title be changed "Sex and Religion, Complimentary Worlds" He explained that the new title was more appropriate, since the principles of Judaism see intimacy as a holy pursuit and not as an obstacle to a personal connection with G-d. In his remarks, he reviewed the Jewish view of intimacy and how it compares with other religions. His session was well attended and favorably received by the participants. Rabbi Weitzman has already been invited to speak at next year's conference. The Rabbis also met with many experts in the field of reproductive medicine to discuss various cases and emerging information with them. As part of the internal continuing education programs at the Institute, they presented what they have learned to the other Puah counselors. Many of these new technologies have been included in Puah's counseling methodology and have been used to help the couples that have turned to Puah for help.
