Puah Visit Asaf HaRofeh Hospital
At the invitation of the head of Asaf HaRofeh Hospital's In Vitro Fertilization Unit, Puah's Rabbinic and counseling staff visited the hospital for a half-day mini-conference to learn about the Unit and share ideas. The combined staffs heard three presentations: The first covered the workings of the IVF unit and its latest technological innovation, such as the possibilities of single embryo transfer to seriously reduce the occasions of multiple births and new methods of freezing eggs. The second lecture discussed male infertility and methods of sperm extraction. The third lecture, presented by Rabbi Menachem Burstein, Founding Director of the Puah Institute, covered the specific needs of religious couples and methods to provide solutions to the challenges they face. Following the lectures, there was a healthy debate about possible mistakes that can be made during the processing of genetic materials and the importance of halachic supervision, as well as practical applications of this service within this particular unit. Mini-conferences such as these enhance the work of the Puah Institute. They provide a forum within which all parties see that they ultimately have the same intentions and aims; they each strive and toil for their client couples to successfully have children. This sense of camaraderie encourages all to work together to achieve this goal within the framework of the halacha.
